Caterpillar assigns unique part numbers to mounting sandwiches based on the physical dimensions and rubber specifications required for each compactor platform. While all three parts share the same construction principle (industrial rubber vulcanized between steel plates), they differ in height, width, hole spacing, and rubber compound hardness to match the specific vibration characteristics and loading conditions of their respective machine classes.

The three-tier system reflects the evolution of Cat's compactor lineup over approximately 35 years:

• 077-2792 (also 0772792, 40-125, 1G6989) — The oldest design, used on machines from the late 1980s through the mid-2000s. This part was the standard mounting sandwich for the CB-434/534/634 combination roller family and the CS-433/533/563/573 smooth drum compactor series.
• 227-0172 (also 2270172) — Introduced with the next generation of Cat compactors, this part covers mid-size machines from the CB-334D era through the CS-56/CS-64 class. It has a larger footprint than the 077-2792 to accommodate the increased drum weights and vibration forces of these more modern designs.
• 358-0286 (also 3580286) — The current-production part for Cat's largest vibratory soil compactors. Introduced with the CS-74B/CP-74B platform and continuing through the current CS16-CS20/CP16-CP17 nomenclature, this is the largest and heaviest mounting sandwich in the Cat compactor range.
